Welcome monsters and mutants to the spooky year of 2003. Asian horror had been around for decades especially in Japan and China but this is the year Korea exploded on the scene. Creepy understated horror that lingers and makes the hairs stand on the back of your neck. A Tale of Two Sisters is a beautifully haunting film. Quiet and spooky. Just like me. Then let's trip into something completely different. Rob Zombie, you either love him or hate him. I don't love half of his films (we won't talk about Halloween) but I appreciate his balls-to-the-walls wacky monster kid enthusiasm. House of 1000 Corpses is his one film that I adore in a psycho fever-dream sort of way. His wife, the adorable Sherri Moon Zombie is a lot like Mr. Zombie. Most people either love her or hate her. Considering that most of Zombie's films are a vehicle for Sherri Moon to dance around in ass-less chaps, laughing maniacally while covered in gore, your opinions of either of them is tied together like blood on a dismembered head. Then we have New French Extremity, a term conceived by Artforum critic James Quandt describing the rise of modern French horror that pushes the gore and violence to supreme levels. High Tension is one of the first and one of my favorites to start this new carnage soaked movement. Oh oui, il y aura du sang (Oh yes, there will be blood).
